(How to wash Hampu bags)
「かばんって洗うの？」と思われる方もいると思います。基本、鞄は洗うことを想定して作られていません。しかし帆布鞄は洗うことができます。が、洗うと縮む恐れがあります。またペイント部が色落ちすることもありますので、部分洗いをお勧めします。以下にかばんの洗い方を説明します。
"Can I wash my bag?" is a question many people wonder about. Generally speaking, bags are not designed to be thrown in the wash. However, Hanpu (canvas) bags are an exception—they can be washed. But please keep in mind that full washing can cause the fabric to shrink and painted or dyed parts to fade. Because of this, I highly recommend spot-cleaning instead.
Below are the step-by-step instructions on how to properly wash and care for your bag:

防水スプレーを使用する事で雨水をはじいたり、汚れをつきにくくする効果があります。風合いを楽しむより、なるべく綺麗なままで使いたいという人にはおすすめです。
しかし防水スプレーを使うと、その効果が薄れるまで洗濯しにくくなる恐れもありますのでご注意下さい。
By applying a waterproofing spray, you can effectively repel rainwater and prevent dirt from sticking to the fabric. I highly recommend this for those who prefer to keep their bag looking as clean and pristine as possible, rather than focusing on the natural aging and changing texture of the canvas.
However, please keep in mind that once a waterproofing spray is applied, it will shield the fabric and make spot-cleaning or washing significantly more difficult until the spray’s effect naturally wears off over time.
防水スプレーを使う際の注意事項
Precautions when using waterproof spray
①必ず、目立たない箇所で少量をお試しの上行って下さい。
②通気性に優れた防水スプレーをご使用下さい。
③防水スプレーを吸い込まないようによく換気をして下さい。または屋外で作業して下さい。過去には死亡事故の例もありますのでくれぐれもご注意下さい。
1. Test Before Full Application
Be sure to test a small amount of the spray on an inconspicuous area of the bag first to check for any color changes or reactions.
2. Choose a Breathable Spray
Please use a high-quality waterproofing spray that offers excellent breathability (air permeability) to preserve the canvas's natural texture.
3. DANGER: Use Outdoors or in Well-Ventilated Areas
Always ensure proper ventilation and avoid inhaling the spray mist. We highly recommend working outdoors. Inhaling waterproofing spray can cause severe respiratory issues and has led to fatal accidents in the past. Please handle with extreme caution.

1. Soap / Detergent: Utamaro Soap (or Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Bar Soap), or OxyClean (or any mild, neutral detergent).

2. Brush: A toothbrush (or a soft scrubbing brush).

3. Water: Lukewarm water (30°C / 86°F or cooler is highly recommended).

4. Towel: A clean, dry towel.

8. Dish Soap: Mild, neutral kitchen dish soap (excellent for cutting through oil and grease).

⚠️ CRITICAL NOTE:
Always choose oxygen-based products. Never use chlorine-based bleach, as it will completely destroy and discolor the fabric fibers.
⚠️ NOTE ON DETERGENTS:
Please do not use acidic detergents on dyed fabrics, as they can cause severe color fading and discoloration.

簡単！ウタマロ石鹸 大体はこれでOK！
①生地を濡らして湿らせたら、ウタマロ石鹸を汚れた部分に直接ゴシゴシと塗り付ける。
②歯ブラシで優しく擦り洗い。広範囲の汚れを落としたい場合にはたわしや食器洗いのスポンジの硬い部分などで優しく擦り洗いして下さい。
※強すぎると生地を傷めてしまうので注意
③軽くすすいでタオルでポンポンしながら拭き取る。
④しわを伸ばして日陰干し。
※日向で干すと変色やしわの原因になります。
※しわが気になるようでしたらスチームアイロンでしわ伸ばしして下さい。その際にアイロンを強く当てると生地を傷めたり変色の原因になりますのでご注意下さい。(外生地のみ)
～注意～
裏地に使われているポリエステル繊維は水に強く縮みにくい性質を持っていますが、一方で熱にとても弱く、アイロンを直接充てると熱収縮してしまい、テカリの原因にもなります。もしポリエステル繊維のしわが気になるようなら、乾く前にしっかり伸ばして乾かすか、あて布を当てて低温でアイロンがけをして下さい。内生地全体がしわだらけで気になるようでしたら、乾く前の濡れた状態でアイロンがけをすると良いでしょう。またピンポイントでしわが気になるようなら、気になる部分を霧吹きで湿らせたうえで、スチーム機能OFFでアイロンがけしてみて下さい。

Step-by-Step Washing Instructions
1. Apply Soap Directly
Moisten the stained area with water, then apply Utamaro soap (or Dr. Bronner’s soap) directly onto the soil using a gentle scrubbing motion.
2. Scrub Gently
Gently scrub the area with a toothbrush. For wider stains, use a soft scrubbing brush or the rough side of a dishwashing sponge.
※CAUTION: Do not scrub too hard, as excessive friction can damage the fabric fibers.
3. Rinse and Tap Dry
Rinse the area lightly with water, then remove the excess moisture by gently tapping (blotting) the fabric with a dry towel.
4. Reshape and Dry in the Shade
Smooth out any wrinkles by stretching the fabric, then hang it to dry in a well-ventilated shady area.
※CAUTION: Avoid drying in direct sunlight, as it can cause severe discoloration and harsh wrinkling.
5. Ironing Out Wrinkles (Outer Fabric Only)
If wrinkles are still a concern, smooth them out using a steam iron. Please do not press too hard or hold the iron in one place too long, as extreme heat can damage or discolor the canvas.
⚠️ IMPORTANT CAUTION: Caring for the Polyester Lining
The polyester fibers used for the lining are highly water-resistant and resist shrinking. However, they are extremely vulnerable to heat. Applying an iron directly will cause heat shrinkage and leave an unsightly shiny gloss (burn marks).
If you want to remove wrinkles from the lining, please follow these methods:
For overall wrinkles: The best approach is to smooth out the inner fabric thoroughly while it is still wet before drying.
For pinpoint wrinkles: Lightly moisten the area with a mist spray, place a pressing cloth (damping cloth) over it, and iron on a low temperature setting with the steam function turned off.

オキシクリーンなど
①定量のオキシクリーンをぬるま湯で解き、汚れた部分に歯ブラシ等洗剤をつけ、優しく擦り洗いします。
②汚れの落ち具合を確認しながら、軽くすすいでタオルでポンポンしながら拭き取る…を繰り返します。
③しわを伸ばして日陰干しします。
※日陰干しにしないと生地の傷みやこわばりが出てきてしまいます
※しわが気になるようならスチームアイロンでしわ伸ばしして下さい
※オキシクリーンがない場合には家庭用食器洗剤でもOK

Advanced Care: Deep Spot-Cleaning with OxyClean
This advanced method is highly recommended for tackling stubborn stains or deep-set dirt

1. Prepare the Solution and Apply
Dissolve a proper amount of OxyClean into lukewarm water. Dip a toothbrush into this solution, apply it directly to the stained area, and gently scrub.
※Pro Tip: If you don't have OxyClean, a standard household kitchen dish soap works as an excellent alternative for cutting through grease. -
2. Rinse and Repeat
While monitoring how well the stain is lifting, lightly rinse the area with water and blot away the dirt and moisture by gently tapping with a dry towel. Repeat this process as necessary until the stain is fully removed. -
3. Reshape and Dry in the Shade
Once the stain is gone, thoroughly stretch out any wrinkles by hand and hang the bag to dry in a well-ventilated shady area.
※CAUTION: Drying the canvas in direct sunlight will damage the fibers, causing the fabric to become stiff, rough, and discolored. Always dry in the shade to preserve the rugged yet soft quality of your Hanpu bag. -
4. Ironing (If needed)
If stubborn wrinkles still bother you after drying, straighten them out beautifully using a steam iron on the outer fabric only.
03 上級編
特別配合の洗剤(おもに手垢や皮脂汚れなど)
①台所用の中性洗剤・酸素系の液体漂白剤・酸素系の粉末漂白剤を１：１：１で混ぜ合わせる。※作り置きはできない
②汚れている部分に歯ブラシ等で軽く叩きながら洗剤を馴染ませる。
③洗剤が生地に馴染んだら、歯ブラシで優しく擦り洗いする。
④汚れの程度によって何度か洗いとすすぎを繰り返す。
⑤乾いたタオルで水気を吸い取り、しわを伸ばしてから日陰干し。
03 Advanced level
Specially formulated detergent version

Advanced Care: Triple-Blend Power Detergent Version
(For Severe Stains & Deep-Set Dirt)
This is our most powerful deep-cleaning method, designed to rescue your bag from severe stains or ancient, set-in dirt using a potent triple-blend solution.
1. Mix the Ultimate Formula (Use Immediately!)
In a small container, mix equal parts (1:1:1) household kitchen dish soap, oxygen-based liquid bleach, and oxygen-based powdered bleach.
⚠️ CRITICAL NOTE: This mixture triggers an immediate chemical reaction and cannot be stored. You must mix it fresh and use it right away.2. Dab and Blend into the Fabric
Using a toothbrush or a similar tool, gently dab the freshly mixed detergent onto the soiled area, allowing it to penetrate deep into the canvas fibers.3. Scrub Gently After Absorption
Once the detergent has been fully absorbed into the fabric, gently scrub the stained area with your toothbrush to lift the dirt away.4. Rinse and Repeat
Depending on the severity of the stain, repeat the gentle scrubbing and light rinsing process several times until the fabric is completely clean.5. Reshape and Dry in the Shade
Remove the excess water by blotting the fabric with a clean, dry towel. Then, thoroughly stretch out any wrinkles by hand and hang the bag to dry in a well-ventilated shady area.
※Reminder: Never dry in direct sunlight, as it will damage the fibers, make the fabric stiff, and cause color fading. Always choose the shade.
04 番外編①
丸洗い
全体的に汚れが目立つようなら、丸洗いもできます。しかし、前述したように、生地の縮みや傷み、ペイント部分の色落ちは避けられません。どうしてもの時以外はお勧めしませんが、一応以下に洗い方の説明をしておきます。
①かばんを裏返しにして洗濯ネットに入れます。
※接着芯が入っているものは裏返しにすると接着芯の剥がれにつながりますので、部分洗いで対応してください。
②おしゃれ着用の中性洗剤を使って「おしゃれ着コース」(ドライコース)で洗う。
③脱水は１分以内。取り出したらしわを伸ばして日陰干し。
04 Extra Edition１
Fully washed
Machine Washing: Full Wash Guide (As a Last Resort)
If the entire bag has become heavily soiled, a full machine wash is possible. However, please note that some shrinkage, minor fabric wear, and fading of any painted or dyed elements are inevitable. I
strongly discourage washing the entire bag unless it is absolutely necessary. If you must proceed, please follow these strict instructions:

1. Prep the Bag
Turn the bag completely inside out and place it securely into a mesh laundry net (wash bag).
⚠️ WARNING FOR BAGS WITH INTERLINING (STIFFENER):
If your bag contains an adhesive interlining (stiffener), turning it inside out will cause the lining to peel off and ruin the bag's shape. For these items, please stick to spot-cleaning only and DO NOT machine wash. -
2. Select the Right Gentle Cycle
Wash the bag using a mild, neutral detergent formulated for delicate items. Be sure to select your washing machine's "Delicate," "Gentle," or "Hand Wash" cycle (often called the fashionable clothes course in Japan). -
3. Short Spin & Dry in the Shade
Set the spin cycle (dehydration) to a maximum of 1 minute. As soon as the cycle finishes, remove the bag, thoroughly stretch out any wrinkles by hand, and hang it to dry in a well-ventilated shady area.
05 番外編②
手洗い(おもに染色された生地)
染色された帆布かばんのお手入れガイド
（主に色落ちを抑え、かばんの形を美しく保ちたい方向け）
カラー帆布や柿渋染めなど、染色された帆布(Hanpu)は、風合いが非常に美しい反面、洗濯方法によっては「色ムラ」や「急激な色落ち」「型崩れ」を起こしやすいデリケートな性質を持っています。大切なかばんを長く、良い状態で愛用していただくために、以下の手順でお手入れを行ってください。
⚠️ 作業を始める前の重要ルール（免責事項）

原則、丸洗いは避けてください！ かばんは基本的に丸洗いするように設計されていません。まずは汚れた部分だけをピンポイントで落とす「部分洗い」を強くおすすめします。

洗剤の選び方： 必ず「おしゃれ着用の中性洗剤」をご使用ください。

❌ 酸性洗剤は絶対NG！（色落ちの直接的な原因になります）

❌ 塩素系漂白剤は絶対NG！（繊維自体をボロボロに破壊し、真っ白に変色してしまいます）

型崩れ防止の接着芯が入っているかばんは、水に浸けたり裏返したりすると、芯が剥がれてブヨブヨになり、二度と元の形に戻らなくるおそれがあります。必ず丸洗いは避け、部分洗いのみで対応してください。
部分洗いの方法
-
部分洗いは汚れた個所をぬるま湯で軽く濡らし、使い古した歯ブラシなどを使い、中性洗剤で軽くこすり洗いをします。※範囲が広い場合には食器用スポンジの硬い面で優しくなでるように洗うと良いです。決して強くこすったりしないでください。

軽く水ですすいだ後、乾いたタオルで汚れた部分をポンポンと叩くようにして、水分と溶け出した汚れを吸い取ります。
-
手でしっかりシワを伸ばし、形を整えてから、必ず風通しの良い日陰に干してください。
全体が汚れてしまった場合：優しく手洗い
かばん全体をどうしても綺麗にしたい場合の、最もダメージが少ない丸洗い方法です。
※一般的な接着芯が入っていないかばんのみ推奨。
ただし、Seven Bells Worksの接着芯入りのかばんは手洗いができますので以下の方法でお試しください。
-
大きめの容器や洗面台（または浴槽）に30℃以下のぬるま湯をため、おしゃれ着用の中性洗剤を規定量溶かします。
-
かばんを液に浸し、上から優しく両手で押したり離したりを繰り返す「押し洗い」をします。※雑巾のように生地同士をゴシゴシ擦り合わせたり、強く揉んだりしないでください。接着芯の剥がれやシワ・色ムラの原因になります。
-
汚れた洗剤液を捨て、綺麗な水(またはぬるま湯)をため直して、再び優しく押し洗いをしながら洗剤を落とします。水が透明になるまで数回水を入れ替えて繰り返してください。
-
かばんを絶対に絞らないでください！ 帆布を絞ると強烈なシワが残り、元に戻らなくなります。乾いた大きめのタオルでかばんを包み、上から優しく押すようにして全体の水分をしっかりとタオルに移します。
-
手でパンパンと叩きながら、全体のシワをしっかり伸ばし、型崩れしないように形を綺麗に整えてから、風通しの良い日陰に干します。
-
❌ 天日干しは絶対NG！強烈な紫外線により、染められた生地が急速に色あせし、繊維が傷んでゴワゴワに硬くなってしまいます。必ず日陰を選んでください。
乾燥後の仕上げ（シワが気になる場合）
乾いた後にどうしてもシワが気になる場合は、表地の帆布側のみに「スチームアイロン」を当てて綺麗に伸ばしてください。ただし、強く押し付けすぎたり、同じ場所に長時間アイロンを当て続けると、生地の傷みや変色の原因になるので、浮かせるように優しくスチームを当ててください。
※裏地にポリエステルなどの化学繊維が使われている場合は、熱で溶けたりテカったりするため、裏地には絶対に直接アイロンを当てないでください。

Hand Wash (mainly dyed fabrics)
Care Guide for Dyed Canvas Bags
(Mainly for those who want to minimize color fading and keep their bags looking their best)
Dyed Hanpu fabrics—such as color canvas or traditional Kakishibu-zome (persimmon tannin dyed) canvas—possess an exceptionally beautiful, rich character. On the other hand, they are highly delicate and prone to uneven color streaks, rapid fading, or loss of shape depending on how they are washed. To ensure your precious bag remains in its best condition and serves you for a long, long time, please follow the care steps below.
⚠️Please avoid full washing if possible!

Generally speaking, bags are not designed to be submerged or thrown in the wash. We strongly recommend "spot-cleaning" (cleaning only the stained area) as your primary approach.

Choosing the Right Soap: Always use a mild, neutral detergent formulated for delicate items.
-
❌ NEVER use acidic detergents: They can cause severe color fading and discoloration.
-
❌ NEVER use chlorine-based bleach: It will completely destroy the fabric fibers and ruin the color.
-
Bags with Interlining (Stiffener): If your bag contains an adhesive interlining to hold its shape, wetting or turning it inside out will cause the lining to peel off, making the bag lose its structure permanently. For these items, you must avoid full washing and stick ONLY to spot-cleaning.

How to Spot-Clean Your Bag
-
Lightly moisten the stained area with lukewarm water, then use an old toothbrush with a mild, neutral detergent to gently scrub the spot. ※For wider stains, it is best to use the rough side of a dishwashing sponge to stroke the area gently. Please do not scrub too hard under any circumstances.

After rinsing lightly with water, gently tap (blot) the stained area with a dry towel to absorb the moisture along with the dissolved dirt.
-
Thoroughly stretch out any wrinkles by hand, reshape the bag, and be sure to hang it to dry in a well-ventilated shady area.
Overall Cleaning: Gentle Hand Wash
This is the gentlest full-wash method for when you absolutely need to clean the entire bag.※While this method is generally recommended only for bags without a standard interlining, bags from Seven Bells Works feature an advanced interlining that can be hand-washed. Please carefully follow the instructions below:
1. Prepare a Lukewarm Bath
Fill a large container, washbasin, or bathtub with lukewarm water (30°C / 86°F or cooler) and thoroughly dissolve the required amount of mild, neutral detergent formulated for delicate clothes.2. Gently Push-Wash (Do Not Scrub or Wring)
Submerge the bag into the solution. Gently press it up and down repeatedly using both hands (the push-wash technique). Please do not rub the fabric against itself like a rag, and do not wring or twist it violently. Doing so will cause the interlining to peel, and lead to heavy wrinkles and uneven color streaks.3. Rinse Thoroughly
Drain the soiled soapy water, refill the container with clean, cool water, and gently press the bag again to rinse out the detergent. Repeat this process, changing the water several times until it runs completely clear.4. Blot Dry with a Towel (NEVER Wring!)
Never wring or twist the bag! Wringing Hanpu will leave permanent, heavy wrinkles that cannot be undone. Instead, wrap the bag in a large, dry towel and press down gently from above to thoroughly transfer the moisture into the towel.5. Reshape and Dry in the Shade
Gently pat the bag by hand while thoroughly stretching out all the wrinkles. Restore the bag to its original shape to prevent distortion, and hang it to dry in a well-ventilated shady area.❌ NEVER dry in direct sunlight: Harsh UV rays will cause dyed fabrics to fade rapidly and turn the canvas fibers stiff and rough. Always choose the shade.
Finishing Touch (If Wrinkles Persist)
If wrinkles are still a concern after drying, you can smooth them out beautifully using a steam iron on the outer Hanpu (canvas) fabric only. However, please avoid pressing down too hard or holding the iron in one place for too long, as extreme heat can damage or discolor the canvas. Instead, float the iron slightly above the surface and apply the steam gently.
※CRITICAL NOTE FOR THE LINING: If your bag features a polyester or synthetic fiber lining, never apply the iron directly to the inside. The direct heat will cause the lining to melt, shrink, or leave an unsightly shiny gloss (burn marks).
